She was just a twelve year old girl. And the days were nothing extraordinary for her. It was typical to see her running to school everyday in the morning . She ended up going late to class most of the days. There was this law. People who stayed nearby always end up going late, and she was a perfect example. She had her own view of things. She believed in magic. She also believed in God and superpowers. She had short hair and all she wanted in life was to be happy. And she did. She loved everything around her. She loved her Grandfather the most! He was a hero to her. Her mother had told her stories about what a good man her grandfather was. People loved him for his honesty and helping nature. He had helped so many people around, that he was considered a great soul by all. He was living in a nearby city with her granmom and her aunt. She knew that her granpa was a great gentleman, a great husband, a great father and the best granpa on earth. She also knew he was really old and she wanted to spend time with them.
Often her mom took her with her siblings to visit her grandparents. And she had great fun and happiness with her cousins and siblings there. There were two dogs in that house and life could not be happier for her. While most of her siblings and cousins preferred playing out in the wild with the dogs and garden mud, she was a little different. Not that she did not want to play like the rest of the kids. But when her gandpa ask the kids to do this and that constantly, she did it and then ran out to play. Others usually run out without heeding to the old couple. Of course, it was not a terrible thing to do. Kids are kids always. But she had a special love for her Grandpa and she did what he said eventhough it was boring to do. She had a great pleasure in hearing her granpa say that she was a good kid compared to others!
By the way, did I tell you she loved God too? She even believed that she can get super powers by doing special prayers. She once proposed the idea to her siblings and cousins and that afternoon, the great Yaga Started. They sat in a circle and each got a thing in which they wanted the superpower to reside! Funny though it may seem, they started chanting mantras and hymns and whatever they knew could connect to God! And her thing was small beautiful glass statue of God. She held it tightly in her hands with great hope that soon her wishes will be granted by God. By that evening they had to leave to her city. All the way in the bus back home, she was thinking about the statue. She could not even bid bye to her granpa as the kids returned really late and were taken straight to the bus after nice scoldings. The two dogs ran beind the bus in an attempt to be with her and her siblings, and after the bus took pace, they gave up with a sigh! It always hurt her to leave the dogs behind. Her thoughts went back to the statue. Now she thought she can get any wish granted. But she decided not to waste her wishes for petty things. She reminded herself to use her gift only and only during a great danger or threat !
Speaking of Threats and dangers, she had one great enemy. Her maths teacher. According to her, this particular teacher was a shame to the teacher society and the teacher too stood as the perfect example for it. The maths teacher has this really annoying habit of asking every kid in the classroom to get something for her. Shocked? Believe me, she was shocked too when she was asked to bring a calendar by the disgusting teacher. She had to bring it the next day and she did. This particular teacher threathened that marks will be lost if they dont act according to her will. So she feared this teacher and next day promplty she got a calendar after pestering her mom. But something happened. Something stopped her. She decided not to give and when the teacher asked her for the calendar she lied that she did not bring it. That was it. A black mark! Now she knew that the teacher would be waiting for an opportunity to get back at her. But then, she admired her Grandpa who was a honest person and never aided someone in doing bad. She wanted to be like him, in fact she wanted to be her grandpa. Furthermore, she had her statue now. Who can do what to her? So she followed her heart and she was ready to face the teacher.
For two days, everything was normal. But on the third day, that happened. She came to class late and she saw the students standing in a queue in front of the teacher's desk. It was maths hour. She excused herself . The teacher allowed because she was late by one minute only . She heaved a sign of relief and hurried to her place. She whispered to her best friend as to what was happening. She was told that the teacher was checking maths homework! Oh God! That was the time she realized that she had not done them. She knew she was doomed! This was a perfect opportunity for the teacher to get back at her. This terrible cruel teacher had this habit of hitting students in their hands, in the knuckles . She rememered in terror at how her best friend cried last time when her knucles were hit with a wooden scale. The teacher screamed out her name and told her to stand in the queue with her homework book. She did not know what to do. She cannot let this disgusting women humiliate her for this, but she had no other way out. She took some notbook and stood in the line. She was screaming inside her head to God to save her.
As the queue went nearer to the desk, her tension mounted to a great extent. Her head started whizzing and her nose started burning. Her hands were sweating. That time she rememberd her staute. She felt a great Relief!! She was going to be saved afterall, she thought!! She ran to her bag and hurriedly opened her bag. To her dismay,The statue was missing. Her heart broke! Her last resort was gone! She was going to be punished, not for the homework, but for not swinging to the teacher's tune! She was almost in tears. Her hope was lost and the teacher again screamed at her ! She replied something in tension and went and stood at the last. She was fervently praying to God to save her at any cost! She did not do the mistake on purpose and she was talking to God! There were just two students in front of her now. The guy in front got his knuckles hit as he had made a mistake in one of the problems. Her heart yelped in fear. It was her turn now. The teacher looked at her mockingly and said, "What my dear? Have you done the sums correctly??". She knew this evil lady was waiting to know that she didnt finish the work. She replied.."Mam"... When suddenly the miracle happened!
Someone called out to that teacher! It was the school attender. She was wondering what was happening. She saw the wooden scale in fear! And then She heard her name being called. She wondered, whether her name was that. Everything happened within few minutes. The teacher came towards her with a look that she was not able to comprehend. Was it pity?? Why would this evil lady pity her? Or what was it? She did not know . The only thing she remembered was that she was asked to go to down and that she was to go home immediately. That particular moment, she was blank. No, her mind was. Totally Blank. What was happening?? But she was in great Joy!! She was thanking God for saving her! Yes!! She was saved from the evil lady. In fact the evil lady was being nice to her all of a sudden. Magic. It has got to be magic, she thought! That staue must be working ! Perhaps it was inside her bag afterall. Maybe it read her heart and saved her on time! Anyway, she was in ectasy! She left the room in joy with the attender!
At the groundfloor, she was surprised to see her siblings ! She was even more surprised to see her mother standing there. She was extremely happy to be united with her family and was thanking God even more! She thought it was the best time of her life. She walked closer to her family and when she finally reached her mom, she noticed something. Her mom was not happy. In fact, mom's face was gloomy, sad... and every dark thing she could think of. Suddenly her mom held her tightly and said in a broken tone, "My dear! Grandfather is no more" ! She stood stunned. Till today she feels guilty. She feels guitly that she made her grandfather die to save herself. Her Statue did work. She.... believed in God.
